Bilateral relations
Afghanistan and Pakistan have maintained diplomatic relations since 1948. Following the independence of Dominion of Pakistan through the partition of British India in August 1947, the Kingdom of Afghanistan was the sole country to vote against Pakistan's admission into the United Nations, though withdrew from the negative vote days later in October 1947. However, the Afghan government under King Zahir Shah began providing support to Pashtun nationalist movements within Pakistan and, in 1952, published a tract laying claim to Pashtun-dominated regions of northwestern and southwestern Pakistan.

Capital of Pakistan
Islamabad is the capital city of Pakistan. It is the country's tenth-most populous city with a population of over 1.1 million and is federally administered by the Pakistani government as part of the Islamabad Capital Territory — with a metropolitan population of over 2.3 million. Built as a planned city along the Margalla Hills in the 1960s and established in 1967, Islamabad replaced Karachi as Pakistan's national capital. It is located in the northern Punjab region, north of the city of Rawalpindi — with which it forms a metropolitan area of over 5.7 million inhabitants.

Kabul is the capital and largest city of Afghanistan. It is within the jurisdiction of Kabul District and has an estimated population of 5,333,284 people. Located in the eastern half of the country, forming part of the Kabul Province, the city is administratively divided into five zones and 22 municipal districts. The current mayor of the city is Mawlawi Abdul Rashid.
