Prize established in 1895 by Alfred Nobel

The Nobel Prize in Literature, here meaning for Literature, is a Swedish literature prize that is awarded annually to an author from any country who has, in the words of Alfred Nobel, "in the field of literature, produced the most outstanding work in an idealistic direction". Though individual works are sometimes cited as being particularly noteworthy, the award is based on an author's body of work as a whole. The Swedish Academy decides who, if anyone, will receive the prize.

Anne Carson

Canadian poet and academic (born 1950)

Anne Patricia Carson is a Canadian academic and writer. Born in Toronto, she graduated from the University of Toronto and starting in 1979 became a professor of classics, comparative literature, and creative writing at several universities. She has taught at the University of Calgary, McGill University, University of Michigan, New York University, and Princeton University. Carson has written more than twenty books, including collections of essays and poetry, as well as translations of ancient Greek tragedies.
