A powerful magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck Panama on October 9, followed by more major tremors and hundreds of aftershocks. What caused the earthquakes and why is the region seismically active? Scientists have the answers.
Panama declared a state of emergency after two major earthquakes and over 100 aftershocks caused widespread damage, injuring 27 people and affecting nearly 900 homes, schools, and infrastructure. The seismic activity, including a 6.1 quake on October 12, raised concerns over prolonged aftershocks.
Panamanian authorities said on Oct. 14 that a 68-year-old woman who was seriously injured in an earthquake had died. Twenty-seven people sustained minor injuries.
