John Doe (male), Jane Doe (female), or J. Doe (neutral/unknown) are multiple-use placeholder names that are used in the British, Canadian, and American legal systems, when the true name of a person is unknown or is being intentionally concealed. In the context of law enforcement in the United States, such names are often used to refer to a corpse whose identity is unknown or cannot be confirmed. These names are also often used to refer to a hypothetical "everyman" in other contexts, like John Q. Public or "Joe Public".

Newly released text messages first reported by TMZ purportedly showed a woman known as Jane Doe speaking with one of the men that she has accused of rape back in 2024 at Cornell University.
The Columbia protest was one of several demonstrations held on college campuses across the country as part of what organizers called a day of action.
Former students say Jane Doe’s rape allegations could have been avoided had the university heeded their calls for action.
