Several factors make for high water levels, and they conspired to worsen the storm surge that flooded coastal areas from North Carolina to New York.
Flood cleanup is underway across New Jersey after a powerful Northeast storm triggered rescues, beach erosion, power outages and widespread flooding.
Out east, erosion was the worst west of Shinnecock Inlet, a coastal geologist said. Beaches in East Hampton lost a lot of sand, but dunes remained standing, a town official there said. And Southold was spared the worst of it.
