Spanish housing activist (1938-2026)
María del Carmen Abascal, known mononymously as Maricarmen, was a Spanish retired secretary and housing activist who gained national attention for her almost seven-year fight to retain her rent-controlled apartment. Her removal from her home while in a stretcher on September 23, 2026 sparked massive protests across Spain. She died on October 7, 2026, just hours before she was set to sign a contract permitting her to return to her apartment with a similar rent price to what she had previously had.
