Region in East Asia
Korea is a peninsular region in East Asia consisting of the Korean Peninsula, Jeju Island, and smaller islands. Since the end of World War II in Asia in 1945, it has been politically divided at or near the 38th parallel between North Korea and South Korea. Both countries proclaimed independence in 1948, and the two countries fought the Korean War from 1950 to 1953. The region is bordered by China to the north and Russia to the northeast, across the Amnok (Yalu) and Duman (Tumen) rivers, and is separated from Japan to the southeast by the Korea Strait.

Mit einer Fläche von 603.628 Quadratkilometern ist sie nach Russland der zweitgrößte Staat Europas und der größte, dessen Gebiet zur Gänze innerhalb des Kontinents liegt. Das Land grenzt im Osten und Nordosten an Russland, im Norden an Belarus, im Westen an Polen, die Slowakei und Ungarn sowie im Südwesten an Rumänien und Moldau. Im Süden grenzt die Ukraine an das Schwarze und das Asowsche Meer. Die Hauptstadt und größte Metropole des Landes ist Kiew, weitere Ballungszentren sind Charkiw, Dnipro, Donezk und Odessa.

Kiew ist die Hauptstadt und größte Stadt der Ukraine. Sie liegt am bis hierhin für kleinere Seeschiffe befahrbaren Dnipro und hat auf einer Fläche von 847,66 km² nahezu 3 Millionen Einwohner. Die Agglomeration umfasst mehr als vier Millionen Einwohner.
