Meteorological event
The forecast for the 2026–2027 El Niño is of such historic severity that the World Meteorological Organization has reported it will be the largest El Niño in at least 1,000 years. Colloquially referred to as a super El Niño, "strong" and "very strong" are the only superlatives used to refer to it scientifically. The term "Godzilla El Niño" was coined by NASA scientist Bill Patzert in 2015 in relation to the historic 1997–1998 El Niño event, and has since gone from casual scientific parlance to some media use.
