An earlier NBC News investigation found a growing pattern of Tesla drivers falling asleep, sometimes intentionally, while relying on driver-assistance software to control their cars for them.
The 22-year-old man from Sacramento told authorities that he had fallen asleep at the wheel while his Tesla was in self-driving mode.
The Tesla struck an occupied patrol car despite traffic cones, road flares, and flashing emergency lights, according to authorities.
