OpenAI textGrain watermarks ChatGPT and Codex text for EU users, but detection tops out near 95% and simple edits can defeat it.
OpenAI now lets API customers watermark model text with textGrain to comply with Europe's AI Act, and it will watermark eligible ChatGPT and Codex output in the EU within weeks. The detector catches only about 80% of watermarked 200-word passages and collapses when anyone swaps in synonyms.
OpenAI will add an invisible watermark to ChatGPT and Codex text in the EU. Its tests show editing can weaken it.
