President Donald Trump contradicted a claim made by one of his ambassadors that he asked Chinese leader Xi Jinping if Beijing wanted to buy U.S. weapons during last week’s meeting between the two world leaders.
The U.S. imposed a weapons sale embargo on China after the 1989 massacre of pro-democracy protesters at Tiananmen Square.
U.S. Ambassador to China David Perdue had told Fox News on Sunday that Trump made the extraordinary offer to sell arms to the rival superpower.
